I just updated the always entertaining terms of use page.

Saturday, November 29, 2003

They must read my blog over there, because now the weather info box is working. LOL - no, I didn't change anything on my page. That section of code has been the same since I added it in early Oct. I've moved it around on the page, but that's it.

I just noticed that the Weather Channel code on my home page isn't working. They're apparently having problems with their site, since I get a lot of broken links trying to access my account there.

The new site of the week is Ready to Soar. They carry remote control airplanes for all skill levels. The site includes videos of several models in action.

You may have noticed that the site of the week is sometimes listed for more than a week. The idea is for each site to get at least 7 days exposure. Due to the holiday weekend, the next one will probably be listed Dec 1.

I added more aviation book reviews today.

I added a bunch of events from December to February to the events calendar.

I just posted a new flying adventure story.

Saturday I went to Fantasy of Flight for the SkyQuest Skydiving Airshow. I'll have pictures on the site later. Here's a preview.

The new site of the week is EAA's Countdown To Kitty Hawk, which is all about the First Flight Centennial Celebration at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in North Carolina on December 17.

By some weird coincidence, The inFrequent Flyer eZine is also taking off December 17. The signup form is now working on that page, which lists some of the content of the eZine. One feature will be the Ask the CFI column.

Welcome to my blog. Some of you may be wondering what is a blog. It's short for "web log" and is a series of messages, usually ordered by date, on some topic. Some people use blogs to keep online diaries or journals. Others are more specific, such as a student documenting life in college, an actor writing about working on a current film production, or some other topic.

This blog will cover the following topics:
1. Updates and news of theinfrequentflyer.com website. When I add new articles or other stuff, I'll mention it here.
2. General aviation discussion and personal flying info (such as things I do that don't warrant their own page on the site).
3. Things I've learned from running the site (hopefully of interest to other site developers and webmasters).

The blog replaces the site update mailing list. The site changes listed on the home page will also be archived here.

I'll be posting when I have something to write about, rather than on a set frequency, but within a few days I should have quite a few posts here.

I will be adding some posts from the past couple months from my notes. The dates on the posts will reflect when things happened, so the posts will make more sense (I hope).

I just added a search feature to the site. I looked at several third-party solutions and settled on Atomz.com. Google offers this service, but it only searches their archive of your site, which could be weeks old. Atomz lets me schedule a weekly indexing and request a fresh one whenever I want. They also provide a list of which search terms are used.

On my home page at the bottom I added a simple search box which will return all the pages which contain all your search words. If that's not powerful enough, I've also added an advanced search page which lets you do all sorts of cool stuff, such as sound-alike spelling (for you bad spelerz out there) and searches by date or finding matches on any of several words you specify.

I've also started adding the simple search box plus a link to the advanced one on my other pages, usually at the top right of the page.

I will be interested in seeing what words people search for on this site.

I just added a page of aviation book reviews to the Reviews section of the site. There are four reviews so far with many more to come. Eventually I'll divide them into categories, but they will all be related to flying.

If you have a book to suggest, please let me know.

My hosting service moved to new servers the past few days, and I had to recreate my email accounts. So if you happened to write to any address on this domain from Nov 3-6, your message might have gone into the cyber black hole. Please resend it.

The new site of the week is My Pilot Store, which is a site for online shopping for about anything for pilots: headsets, GPS, training aids, books, software, etc.

Yesterday's election here in St. Petersburg over Albert Whitted Airport was a resounding success. By a 3-1 margin, voters decided to keep the airport open permanently. There was a well-funded drive in favor of turning the airport site into a waterfront park (which most of us believe is a coded way of saying luxury condos). The city already has several nice waterfront parks, some within walking distance of the airport. Personally I'd like to see some of the parks converted to airports. :) There is also a major issue of FAA grants the city accepted for the airport; those cannot be simply ignored.

My brother-in-law Ralph passed his instrument checkride yesterday on his first try.
